Stanfield Hill

Stanfield Hill
(and Howrah Beach option)

A delayed start today as our planned access to Stanfield Hill is fenced off and several homes are under construction. We regrouped in Nirranda Court and followed the fire trail beside the water tank.
It was easy to follow, just go uphill.

It went up and up but there were good views behind us.

Having a breather and deciding which option to take.

Through the bush!

Various levels of enthusiasm for this part of the walk.

Organising lunch

Wondering where the beach walkers had got to...

and this is what they were doing. Having walked from Howrah.

Charles Darwin walked here in 1836. He was in Hobart on the Beagle and didn't feel well so he got the ferry across to Bellerive for the day. He made notes and observations of the geology and plant life, as he walked along the beaches and over Mornington Hill, now Waverley Flora Park and also Knopwood Hill across the present highway.

Along Howrah Beach and over Second Bluff

Onto Bellerive Beach

Meanwhile ...

Back onto the fire trail

Still going up, even more steeply

But there were opportunities for a sit down

Nearly to our goal

The last push from Base camp

And onto the summit
Views in all directions
Single Hill

Looking towards the Causeway at Midway Point

Alum Cliffs

Mount Nelson with the Signal Station

kunanyi Mount Wellington

Returning the same way

The sun came out

No sensible map this week

Bridge of Remembrance and Queens Domain

Bridge of Remembrance and Queens Domain

Assembling, sorting lunch details and being reminded not to get lost. Today we are heading to the Bridge of Remembrance and taking in other sights on Queens Domain. "ooo!"

Setting off towards the Joggers Loop, also known as Max's Infinity Loop,

This is it, it is named after orienteering champion, the late Max Cherry. Other names were considered including the predictable variations on 'Joggy Mcjogface' and also 'Run Forrest Run'.

There are views across the northern city to kunanyi Mount Wellington

A detour along a bush track

To Grass Gully, where native grasses are thriving

A pause to regroup and ask "Where next?"

The track brought us to Soldiers Walk

I happen to know that these two are discussing funeral plans and wills.

We reach the Bridge of Remembrance with its distinctive architecture.

Pointing the way to the Cenotaph

Another view of the mountain, this time above the workers finishing off the bridge access paths.

And Tasman Bridge in the distance.

The MONA ferry on the River Derwent.

Returning via Soldiers Walk

Passing the Powder Magazine.

Mmm?

Some other interesting observations

Note the name of this fallen soldier

And then to lunch in the Botanical Gardens

Succulent Omelette

Succulent curly potato wedges (with fish)

Succulent Breakfast Stack
all meals were huge.

The restaurant is called "Succulent" I can see why.
