Stanfield Hill
(and Howrah Beach option)
A delayed start today as our planned access to Stanfield Hill is fenced off and several homes are under construction. We regrouped in Nirranda Court and followed the fire trail beside the water tank.
It was easy to follow, just go uphill.

It went up and up but there were good views behind us.
Having a breather and deciding which option to take.
Through the bush!
Various levels of enthusiasm for this part of the walk.
Organising lunch
Wondering where the beach walkers had got to...
and this is what they were doing. Having walked from Howrah.
Charles Darwin walked here in 1836. He was in Hobart on the Beagle and didn't feel well so he got the ferry across to Bellerive for the day. He made notes and observations of the geology and plant life, as he walked along the beaches and over Mornington Hill, now Waverley Flora Park and also Knopwood Hill across the present highway.
Along Howrah Beach and over Second Bluff
Onto Bellerive Beach
Meanwhile ...
Back onto the fire trail
Still going up, even more steeply
But there were opportunities for a sit down
Nearly to our goal
The last push from Base camp
And onto the summit
Views in all directions Single Hill
Looking towards the Causeway at Midway Point
Alum Cliffs
Mount Nelson with the Signal Station
kunanyi Mount Wellington
Returning the same way
The sun came out
No sensible map this week
