Kaoota Tramway

Kaoota Tramway

We met at the Margate end of the Tramway and walked up the hill from the Chicken Farm on Lawless Road to find the start.

The track slopes very gently uphill and is wide and easy walking.

Sharp eyes noticed some coal, presumably fallen from the old carts that ran on rails from the mine at Kaoota.

The Sandfly Colliery Tramway (also known as theKaoota Tramway) was a 20 km (12 mi), 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge tramway linking the Kaoota Mine to Margate, Tasmania. Constructed in 1905–06, theTramway climbed 457 m (1,499 ft) above sea level and crossed ten bridges.

Refurbished bridge

Until we came to this irresistible feature that three people were persuaded to demonstrate.

Looking across to Sleeping Beauty (I think)

Eventually it is time to turn and retrace our steps.

When we walk from the Kaoota end, this might be the turnaround point.

There are plenty of these signs around

Back over the bridge

To see the view  down to the river and...

Our cars parked on the roadside

From here we made our way to lunch in an interesting garden setting. The soup was delicious and links  to the recipes are below
