 Middleton History Walk

Today we travelled to Middleton for a history talk followed by a walk around the sites of significance in the township.

Tom planned and arranged today, including this welcome introduction.

Leaving the Middleton Community Centre

The Community Hall was relocated here from a previous location near the boat ramp where it tended to flood. 

Starting from the end of McDowalls Road.

Some art works entertained us on our way.

A Store has existed since 1848, this version was rebuilt after the 1967 bushfires

Opposite the General Store is a memorial to the 1967 bushfires.

Heading down to the jetty

We pass the site of the Anglican Church.

The original Hall was here on the waterfront

Looking across to Bruny Island. At one time the postmaster and his two daughters would row across once a week and deliver mail all across the island.

 A place to pose for a photo.

Once used to ship strawberries and raspberries for processing in Hobart, 

Slip Cottages to house the workers of the nearby shipyard. Now home to a friendly pig and sheep.

From here we retraced our steps and headed up Oates Rd

Looking across Green Island to Bruny Island

We visited the cemetery 

There were lots of decorated headstones

This is the oldest one I found. 1810

Obligatory kunanyi Mount Wellington 

Then downhill to our cars

There were 20 Ramblers. lunch was at Woodbridge Village Store
