Waverley Flora Park

 Waverley Flora Park

We started at the Winifred Curtis entrance to the park, at the end of Lanena Street.

Here is some background on this important Hobart botanist

Local wildlife?

Off we go

We made our way via the northern edge of the park...

...to the Avenue of Honour and Armistice Memorial.

Bellerive Rifle Club established a rifle range here in 1905, in 1918 they started work on a Soldiers Avenue of Honour,  this was completed by Clarence Council in 2019 marking the Centenary of Armistice at the end of WW1. Tasmanian artist Folko Kooper was commissioned to create a memorial sculpture. It incorporates the shape of an inverted rifle butt.

Turning into the track which goes through the old quarry

A small group searching for the right path

Wildflower or invader?

The quarry

We are on a part of the Darwin Trail

About Mr. Darwin's visit

A grassy section at the lower end of the park

There were many birds, we could hear them, but this one was prepared to pose for a photo

Heading back uphill...

to the radio aerial

Heading south with a view over Arm End and River Derwent

We turned off and went to the pond, which is usually dry but recent rain has filled it.

We are now above the old quarry that we passed earlier in the walk.

There is a rocky platform with views over Bellerive

Heading back to the cars

Stylidium graminifolium (Trigger plant)

Diuris sulphurea (Tiger orchid)

There were 16 Ramblers and we had lunch at Bellerive Yacht Club.
